Sector: Research Project
The objectives of this survey were to evaluate how residents in the Jewellery Quarter perceive, understand and value their neighbourhood, how this perception is linked to urban form and the built environment, and how it has influenced socio-economic decisions, such as choice of location. In this context, the survey intended to explore the role of 'hard' and 'soft' location factors. In the past, place competitiveness was mainly influenced by so-called 'hard' location factors, such as affordable work space, infrastructure in terms of transport and accessibility, and availability of regional subsidies. It has been argued that so called 'soft' location factors, referring to quality of place, lifestyle, atmosphere, or cultural offer have gained influence on relocation and migration behaviour especially among the creative industries. Furthermore, the survey intended to analyse residents' proposals and opinions about the future development of the Jewellery Quarter. This information is particularly valuable for forthcoming urban regeneration proposals.
