Sector: Research Project
This workshop marked the completion of the first two research stages (historical research and infrastructural research) and commencement the third stage (development of a design program). Research stage 1 analysed the social, cultural, economic and physical development of the quarter. Research stage 2 analysed current needs in terms of accessibility, infrastructure, land use, vacant buildings and public space.
Workshop participants were: D5 staff, Prof. Mohsen Aboutorabi (Birmingham City University) and Julie Morgan ('made' - Midlands Architecture + The Designed Environment). Initial ideas were developed for design interventions in Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter in order to improve the quality of the existing urban environment. Such improvements were proposed to stimulate the socio-economic development and to open up new opportunities for business development by promoting the unique character of this historical inner city quarter.
