D5 entered into a Knowledge-Transfer-Partnership (KTP) with Birmingham City University to enable the practice to become actively involved in an urbanist research project. Andreas Wesener, an architect who is doing a PhD in European Urbanism, has been appointed as a full-time KTP associate to carry out research tasks and manage the project with the practice. The KTP programme aims to provide D5 with knowledge to broaden its urban design knowledge base to improve marketability on a national and international level.
D5's project aims to develop a new urban regeneration plan for the Jewellery and Gun Quarters in Birmingham with a focus on the socio-economic and socio-cultural environment of the city. The question of how the built environment influences such important issues as cultural identity or social ex or inclusion has been inadequately addressed and this project aims to contribute towards solutions for a sustainable community development.
